Summit Racing® protorque starters are 100 percent new! Not rebuilt with used parts and cases like most other starters. Our Summit® lightweight Nippondenso-type Protorque starters offer a 4.0:1 gear-reduction ratio and a whopping 1.9 HP. That's 222 ft.-lbs of racecar cranking power. If that's not enough cranking power to suit you, there are even more powerful 3.1 HP monsters, which are a pound lighter! They have a 4.44:1 reduction ratio and churn out an awesome 342 ft.-lbs. of torque. Both of our Summit® powerhouses are suitable for engines up to 502 c.i.d., and compression ratios of up to 18.0:1. GM versions are adjustable for five mounting positions; Ford types, for 18. And, to prevent corrosion and electrical shorts, both starters wear a gold dichromate finish.

Works great. Put it on a high compression 347 that my old starter that was supposed to turn over 13 to 1 compression ratio wouldn't turn over and it has no problem at all.

Great Product! Great Price!

This is a great addition to any older car. I added this to my 1967 mustang and it worked exactly as I anticipated. This product was very well designed, the offset length is perfect, the 18 position makes it easy to install, and the quality is better than expected. This is also the perfect starter if you have headers. I have had this for over 6 months in my car and it is working great. Awesome product!! ...read more

This piece of junk just stranded me.

Summit RacingSummit Racing Verified Purchase

I bought this starter (stupidly) for my 357 Cleveland build. 11:1 compression that falls well within advertised values. Right? Well it works when everything is cold but as soon as the engine gets to operating temperature your up the creek. It will barely turn the engine over and god help you if your operating temperature is 195 plus. It acts as if your battery is dead slowly romping over and straining for every bit of ground it can get if any. Starter blankets are not an option since heat is suppose to be kept out but also will be held in. The best option is not to get this thing. Also I must add that if you have a later Ford with the solenoid on the fender your about to be cast back into the General Motors Twilight Zone with a total rewire and a junk solenoid mounted on the starter. I will also add that it did not come with shims and it sounds like it is grinding when it starts occasionally. ...read more

Summit Racing Protorque Starter

Summit RacingSummit Racing Verified Purchase

Had to replace my previous starter when my fuel injection system went stupid and pumped so much fuel into the engine that it kicked back and broke the starter. After an oil and plug change, this Summit starter cranks the engine as quickly as the previous, more expensive starter. It is also a little smaller, which is a better fit for the TCP steering rack in my '65 Mustang. Also, though it isn't infinitely clockable like the previous starter was, I was easily able to clock it to achieve a great fit and the clocking bolts appear stronger than the previous "tough" starter. Wiring instructions are a little lame, but the method will work fine, just uses more wire than you need. After two weeks, no complaints! ...read more

Ok

Summit RacingSummit Racing Verified Purchase

The instructions were not clear about changing the wiring from the solenoid, a direct wire is required. It is very noisy, I removed the starter and bellhousing, clutch and flywheel to make sure it wasn't eating the teeth off the flywheel. It wasn't, it's very noisy. It doesn't crank any faster than the stock starter.
