Be sure to carry a spare set of mechanical points

I have had 2 modules randomly go bad on me, one while the car was running and one in-between start-ups. Doing some internet searching showed many others have problems with these randomly going bad. For me, one took years, one took months. When it works, it works fantastic. They just break with decent regularity. So use it, enjoy it, but keep a set of ol' fashion mechanical points in the glove box to change out when you get stranded. ...read more

Great Product but a difficult install on some cars

The install needed for my 1968 Mustang took a not too well published turn. After reading the install procedures it became apparent that some cars have a "Pink Resister Wire" that runs from the ignition switch to the firewall UNDER THE DASHBOARD that controls voltage to the positive pole on the coil. The voltage drops from 12V down to as low as 4.5V after the engine starts which of course the Pertronix system doesn't like at all. What has always been a relatively simple Pertronix install became a task and a half. After hours of making futile attempts to get access to the PINK wire without dismantling my entire dashboard I surrendered and starting looking for an alternate answer. It took a few more hours of intensive web browsing but I finally hit on a reasonable answer to the problem. A 12V SPST Relay wired to use the 12V supplied by ignition to trip the relay and use the relay to supply a clean 12V to the positive pole on the Coil. Strategic placement of the Relay and extra wiring kept the engine compartment very stock looking. Good product. I have used these for years with only a few guidelines. First, make sure you supply the Pertronix with constant voltage. If the voltage supply drops below 10 the car will not run. If the voltage supply connection is not hard wired the car developes an intermittent miss.
