These PerTronix Ignitor III® solid-state ignition systems feature an adaptive dwell that maintains peak energy throughout the entire rpm range, reducing misfires while improving engine performance. Peak current level is reached just prior to spark for maximum energy without the heat buildup, increasing coil performance and module reliability. They adjust spark timing at higher rpm to compensate for the inherent electronic delay, sense startup, and develop more energy for quicker, easier starting. The PerTronix Ignitor III® solid-state ignition systems have a built-in LED for user feedback confirmation of the rev limiter setting.

Ignitor III Installation

Summit RacingSummit Racing Verified Purchase

Buyer beware on this one. Read the fine print regarding your application. There are a few things that are glossed over when you are reading the marketing materials. First of all, this Ignitor III is not compatible with solid core spark plug wires. Not too many people run solid core these days, but it would be nice to know ahead of time if you were on a budget. Second, the Ignitor III is sensitive to input voltage going to the coil. If it not "just right" then you may have problems. You should check the input voltage on your application prior to spending money on this unit. If your input voltage is not right around 11.5V when the car is running, then be prepared to do what ever it takes to fix that phenomenon. In my case, I had to by pass the resistor wire in the ignition circuit (Ford application). This is not a trivial task. I spent several hours (under the dash)on this because I did not want to cut up a perfectly good wiring harness and I wanted the installation to look clean. If you ever go back to points, or another ignition module, you may wish that you had that resistor wire back in place. I ended up running parallel wires. Third, the Ignitor III did not like the coil that I was using (an old Flamethrower unit). Not sure what was going on there, but I had to swap coils. The old coil passed all the diagnostic tests that I could find on line, but did not work in this application. Lastly, I had to play with the timing before I could get the car to fire and run. Not a big deal, but not what I expected either. In summary, this was a very time consuming and frustrating installation. Particularly compared to previous Ignitor (original version 1)installs that generally went well. I used to be a big Pertronix fan, but not so much anymore. Best of luck. ...read more

Not sure how much HP I gained, but the best part is my engine runs a ton smoother. Plus no more points! Easy upgrade!

PerTronix 71281 Solid-State Ignition

Summit RacingSummit Racing Verified Purchase

This was easy to install, had very clear and detailed instructions. I installed it in less than an hour, hit the starter and it took right off and runs great. This was a replacement for an older PerTronix system in the 1966 Mustang I recently purchased and was a good improvement in both design and perfromance.

Amazing

I've been using Ignitors in all my classic cars since the 80's, but this new Ignitor III is something else. Easy to install, totally hidden under the distributor cap, it gives you the high performance spark and rev limiter capability of a box. Money well spent. Definitely check the voltage to your coil, and bypass the resistor ballast / wire if needed to get the power your spark plugs deserve. My coil was only 5.8 volts! Installed their ignition relay module also to get 12 full volts. Acceleration and fuel mileage both went up. ...read more

Great product!

I was having problems with my points system so I finally decided to go with the pertonix 3. I installed it into my '72 f100. The difference is MORE than night and day. It's almost like a new motor is in the truck! So much smoother and I have peace of mind when I'm driving now. Thanks summit and pertonix!
