The MSD Pro-Billet HEI distributors pick up where the originals left off. Drawing on years of high-performance ignition experience, MSD engineers created a unique ignition module and internal coil that are capable of running above 9,000 rpm. Stock and other aftermarket modules lose spark energy at about 4,500 rpm. These modules produce 50 percent more current than stock units, and deliver a much more precise timing signal as well as more dwell control. The coil delivers over 100 millijoules of energy across the plug gap. For strength and high rpm stability, the QPQ-treated oversized shaft is guided by a sealed ball bearing on top and long sintered bushing at the bottom. The QPQ coating provides a low-friction coating on the shaft and also makes it highly resistant to corrosion. TIG welded to the top of the shaft is an adjustable mechanical advance assembly. The distributors are supplied with extra springs and stop bushings, so you can tailor an ignition curve to match your driving needs. The advance assembly features chromoly weights that slide on nylon pads for smooth timing advancement through the entire rpm range. There is also a vacuum advance canister to improve economy while cruising. All of these features are enclosed in a great looking, billet aluminum housing that is CNC-machined for accuracy and incredible strength. The distributors come complete and ready to drop in with a high-quality rotor and cap with brass terminals for great spark transfer. Simply connect a 12 V source to the distributor and you're up and running. They're designed to replace GM HEI distributors that use a 4-pin ignition module.

For several years my 1976 Chevy Nova 305-V8 has had hot starting problems. Tuning, rebuilding the carburetor, a new distributor (another brand), cleaning all grounding connections, etc., solved the problem only for a short time. The MSD Pro-Billet HEI distributor was installed to replace the other distributor and the engine now starts cold and hot without hesitation. This is after the car had not been driven for several months after stranding me in a hot parking lot for 3 hours. After the MSD installation, the little 305 has been performing well for a month or more now. So far, so good. A friend of mine up the street uses an MSD Pro-Billet in a 1976 Ford Mustang he built. This car is rarely driven and failed to start after sitting in the garage for a year. It turned out that the circuit board in the MSD distributor had failed. Internet research turned up other owners with the same or similar trouble. It seems the engines need to be run and brought to operating temperature at least every couple of weeks to keep the MSD distributors operational, a symptom denied by the MSD representatives. I'll be running the Nova more often than once every two weeks, so hopefully I should be O.K. I hope the longevity justifies the higher price. Other than that, installation what a snap. I think the installation pamphlet could be better. It did not answer all of my questions. For example, the vacuum advance setting and how to adjust it was not addressed. The factory centrifugal advance setting had similar, but not exact, curve used on the 305 V8. Exactly matching the Nova's book advance curve was not achievable, but the MSD factory setting was the best fit for the driving I do.
