The pump is a solid cast body. I opened it up to check the interior. The gears mesh and turn EXTREMELY smoothly. From the factory, it appears the ends of the gears have been very finely tapered to avoid snagging the end plates. Wall to gear clearance was LESS than .003" (both gears). The bottom plate to gear clearance also was LESS than .003". I did mildly polish (lapped) the bottom plate and mating area of housing on flat steel wool. I ported the output area mildly with a Dremel grinder (chamfered the top area of the output channel mildly, smoothed and rounded the bore to the output pipe), but I did not router anti-chatter channels (don't have right tools for that). Cleaned thoroughly to ensure no material ends up inside pump, then re-assembled. It went together very smoothly. Includes nylon/plastic sleeve in the box. I recommend using a STEEL sleeve if at all possible. I assembled this to the SBC block using a Summit copper gasket (p/nSUM-111480) with an ARP stud (p/n230-7003) after installing the ARP oil pump shaft with steel sleeve (p/n134-7901). NOTE: Any modifications are YOUR responsibility and immediately void any return rights or manufacturer warranties. DO NOT "try" something unless you're willing to buy another pump if you err. I am impressed with workmanship for an entry level (i.e., low cost) oil pump. ...read more

I had a problem with this particular Melling oil pump. The bypass valve in it wouldn't close completly causing low to no oil pressure at an idle when hot. It would make 80 PSI at 3000 RPM though. I had to pull the pan, inspect the oil pump and found the bypass valve sticking. I cleaned the pump and made sure the bypass valve was operating correctly and reinstalled it. This solved the problem. I've never had a problem with Melling products in the past, this was a first for me. ...read more
