Not good for alternator

I bought this switch because of the extra terminals for alternator disconnect. Although it is rated at 175a the smaller alternator terminals evidently can't handle the load. Mine burned out after two trips to the track. I should mention I have electric fuel and water pumps plus cooling fans and a 105amp alternator. I developed a high speed miss that I couldn't figure out. I finally discovered the alternator was no longer connecting to the battery and I was running on battery only. The miss was because my MSD was running out of power. I ordered another one to install while the original was sent back thinking it was just a fluke. The replacement showed .2 of a volt drop across the terminals which tells me it can't handle the amperage my alternator is putting out. I eliminated it for the alternator and ran that wire direct to the battery. The main shutoff portion works fine so far. My advice is forget the alternator disconnect feature, get a regular HD two terminal switch for the main battery cable and run a separate isolated 6 ga wire from the alt to the battery. Hope this helps someone else avoid some head scratching. ...read more

Second circuit rated only 20 amps

Summit RacingSummit Racing Verified Purchase

I bought this DPST switch to separate the starter current from components sensitive to voltage spikes. Although the switch seems well made, the "alternator" side is only rated for 20 amps continuous load, which wasn't noted in Summit's description. Longacre makes #45782 for higher load rating applications. Also, be aware that this switch does not come with a safety worker decal. ...read more
