Everything would expected from Ford ... Quality!

Summit RacingSummit Racing Verified Purchase

Dropped this engine into my 1967 Mustang coupe after the original engine started to show (and feel) it's age (almost 200K miles) and I haven't looked back. The fact that it came complete took out all the guess work of which intake/carb/heads/etc. to use ... all I needed was a water pump and ignition box and I was good to go. The cam that comes in the engines makes it sound mean, so it sounds awesome on cruises. Looking forward to breaking in the 100 miles. Thank you FORD Racing! ...read more

Excellent engine alternative

I purchased this engine as a replacement to my worn out mildly modified (~280fwhp) 302 in my 70 F100 that I rebuilt 34 yr/100K miles ago. There are many positive and negative comments about this and other crate engines, but for the cost of this one, it was difficult for me to justify rebuilding it myself or having someone do it and make it a full roller engine. Having it come more or less complete, saved a lot of time and expense. So far the results have supported that decision. During install I removed the plugs for better clearance past the headers and to make it easier to rotate the crank. Upon removal I noticed the plugs had been fired indicating the engine was probably tested at the factory - something I didn't expect. After the install, oil priming, and priming the fuel system, the engine started up immediately. The carb tuning was very close, only the idle needed adjustment. Even though I needed to remove the distributor to prime the engine and install some cooling fittings, the marks I made prior to removal were almost spot on when it came time to check the timing. All indicating that the engine was probably factory tested. For my application, I kept the fox body oil pan, no clearance issues and the drain plug locations miss the cross member so draining will be easy and mess free. Some may opt for a larger pan or a more original look. With this fox body pan, removal or lifting of the engine will not be required to remove the oil pan in the future. There are many odds and ends needed to complete this install, do not underestimate these parts when putting a building budget together. Mine ran about an additional $1200 which included a Tuff water pump, Edelbrock fuel pump, TCI 451100 torque converter (recommended by TCI for my application after consultation with them), TCI flexplate, MSD 6A ingnition box, MSD Blaster 2 coil, Tuff starter, misc fuel and water fittings, hoses, fluids, and some dress up odds and ends. The engine was easy enough to install - did it solo. Including engine bay cleanup and painting, R&R the engine, it took less than 40 relaxed hours. The engine is running well, has plenty of power, the stall on the torque converter I selected is very good for my use (truck weighs under 4000lbs). Those wanting a more traffic driven vehicle may opt for a tad less stall. I am running a C4 transmission with 3.50:1 rear end. For now (~500 miles), so far, so good - although time will tell. ...read more
