That latter characteristic translates into increased ground, oil pan, and header clearance, but both factors can be equally important in a race car. installed starter and worked great for first few tries. After that starter just kept hitting the flexplate and would not turn motor over. Checked voltage, shimmed it, everything. Not a moron something was wrong with this starter, picked a vortec style mini starter from advance and worked like a charm everytime. I put this starter on a Chevy 350 with 12:1 compression. It replaced the OEM starter and what a difference! This engine starts like a diesel now, winds right up even on hot summer days when the engine is completely warmed up, amazing for the price! The only small issue I had was misaligning it the first try, it needs to be noted that the starter mounting block has two sets of holes and on 350 engine blocks, you'll need to bolt the starter on the outside set of holes so it's furthest away from the engine block. ...read more

This starter works great. It however it is not shorter the the stock starter only 1/3 smaller around. While this extra clearance is good, if your constraint is the center dump of a block hugger style header this will not fix your issue. If your constraint is next to the starter then this will get you as much as 1-3/4 " between the side of the starter and the header as it passes by. I changed headers out to make room for the starter because in my case the starter had no chance of a long and productive life with the center dump rejecting heat in to its housing right where the end bearing and brushes sit. ...read more

Installed on a 11.5 to 1 compression ratio small block Chevy, in a 1956 Bel Air. Fit great and left plenty of room for headers. So far so good, with no problems cranking the motor. Summit price was $50.00 less than local supplier for same unit. Unit looks good and instructions for set up (Gear clearance and shim install) were detailed and easy to understand. Bought for my 383 in my race car. It's a tight fit but I was able to trim the wounding plate and install ( had to do that on the old one too). I have 14:1 compression and it cranks over very fast. Great quality so far and at that price I can afford a new one when this one quits.
