Step-by-Step: Rebuilding a Holley OEM 4-Barrel Carburetor

Slide Show

Yes, we know—Ford hasn’t built a carbureted 5.0L Mustang since 1985. So what the heck are we doing running a tech story on such a, well, antique?

A couple reasons, actually. A lot of Mustang racers still run carburetors, which are proven air and fuel metering systems ideally suited for full-throttle competition. Also, carbureted 5.0L Fox bodies are becoming very collectible, and will become restoration candidates like first-gen Mustangs are currently. Even though it’s basically an EFI world, knowing how to rebuild a carburetor is still useful knowledge to have.

We put that knowledge to use on a 1985 Mustang with a carbureted five liter. With less than 50,000 miles on the odometer, the car is as stock as the day Ford bolted it together. After 17 years, various items needed some attention, and the 600 cfm Holley four-barrel was no exception. The Mustang was running a little rough at part-throttle, would stumble on downshifts, and was beastly until it fully warmed up. But when the secondaries decided they didn’t want to work, we yanked off the carb for a rebuild.

Good thing we did, because it was a mess. The power valve was shot, fuel was leaking from virtually every gasket, and the vacuum diaphragm “pot” that controls the secondaries was inoperable. Fortunately, Holley carburetors are not difficult to rebuild, thanks to their modular design and the company’s Renew Kits. Each Renew Kit has virtually everything you need—gaskets, O-rings, needle-and-seat assemblies, power valve, secondary and choke diaphragms, and hardware—to overhaul your model carburetor. Holley even has Renew Kits for OEM carbs like our Mustang’s Model 4180C.

The results of our rebuild were darn near miraculous. The engine warms up faster, has better part-throttle drivability, and perhaps most importantly, those secondaries open nice and wide when you mash the go-pedal. And with a Holley Renew Kit, a few common hand tools, and a Saturday afternoon, you can have a carb revival of your own.
