Step-by-Step: Installing a Holley Throttle Body on an LT1

Slide Show
It’s time to give Chevy’s LT1 some love. Following in the footsteps of the original Mouse and overshadowed by its LS1 and LS2 cousins, the LT1 has been the “forgotten small block.” Which is a shame, because the engine introduced some cool innovations like reverse-flow cooling and an optically triggered, front-mounted distributor—not to mention that every 1992-96 Corvette and V8 Camaro/Firebird built between 1993 and 1997 had an LT1 under the hood.
Like every other small block ever made, the LT1 responds well to relatively simple modifications. It just happened Holley Engineering had a 1996 LT1 Camaro available for testing, so we convinced them to install a staple of hot rodded EFI engines: a larger throttle body. Holley even offered to dyno test the car in its stock form and then do a run after installing the piece.
The Holley throttle body is a dual 58mm design that’s CNC-machined from billet aluminum and flows substantially more air than the stock GM piece. As you’ll see, the throttle body is easy to install and provides a substantial increase in power for just an hour or so worth of work.
So how much extra power did Holley’s billet aluminum wonder add to our test Camaro? Almost 12 horsepower and 14 foot-pounds at the rear wheels—power that you can actually feel when you mash the go-pedal. If that isn’t giving an LT1 some love, we don’t know what is.
