Closer Look: Summit Racing Street & Strip Carburetor

Slide Show
To (badly) paraphrase Mark Twain, the reports of the carburetor’s demise are greatly exaggerated.
OK, so the OEMs haven’t built a carbureted engine in 20 years. And yeah, electronic fuel injection systems have gotten more affordable and easier to install and tune. To which we say, pop open the hoods on all the musclecars, street rods, and bracket racers on your block. We’ll bet our lunch money that almost every one of them sports a carburetor.
Need more convincing? The lowly carb has been the horsepower-making air and fuel mixer of choice in most forms of racing for going on 100 years. Walk around the pits at the next drag race, NASCAR event, or Saturday night dirt track shebang. That’s right—nothin’ but carburetors.
The reasons for the carburetor’s popularity in the age of electronic everything are very understandable. Carburetors are simple, reliable mechanical devices. They’re easy to rebuild and upgrade, and can be tuned with little more than a screwdriver and a good ear. Best of all, a good carburetor can make power—lots of power.
Which brings us to the latest itineration of the carburetor. The Summit Racing Street & Strip carburetors are designed for street machines, trucks and tow vehicles, and mild drag or oval track applications. That means you’ll get excellent power and throttle response virtually out of the box, with just minimal tuning for your particular engine combination.
The Street & Strip carburetors are completely new from the baseplate up, and are made on modern tooling to insure quality and reliability. Over two years and thousands of development and testing hours were invested to create carburetors that make power and are easy to tune. Take a look at the laundry list of features and see for yourself:
• All-aluminum construction for better warp resistance, weight savings, and
calibration retention
• Square-bore design—fits virtually every aftermarket intake manifold
• One-piece design eliminates gaskets below the fuel line for leak-free operation
• Adjustable/replaceable accelerator pump discharge nozzles and idle circuit feed restrictions
• Extra-thick baseplate for excellent carb-to-manifold sealing and gasket retention
• 30cc accelerator pump(s) and annular discharge boosters
• Externally adjustable center-hung floats, clear sight glass float windows
• Color-coded vacuum ports
• Tumble-polished body and black anodized trim
• Wet-flow tested and pre-calibrated for street use
• Use standard Holley Model 4150/4160 jets, power valves, floats, needles and seats, accelerator pump diaphragms and cams, and choke assemblies
• Chrome steel fuel line, base gaskets, and hardware included
The Summit Racing Street & Strip carburetors are available in three versions:
SUM-M08600VS, 600 CFM Vacuum Secondary
• Ideal for mild street engines up to 350 cubic inches
• Dual plane intake manifold and headers recommended
• Camshafts with duration up to 215 degrees @ .050
• Stock or mild stall converter
SUM-M08750VS, 750 CFM Vacuum Secondary
• Ideal for mild street engines from 400 to 454 cubic inches
• Dual plane intake manifold and headers recommended
• Camshafts with duration up to 220 degrees @ .050
• Stock or mild stall converter
SUM-M08750MS, 750 CFM Mechanical Secondary
• Ideal for hot street, bracket drag race, or mild oval track engines up to 400 cubic inches
• Single plane intake manifold, aluminum/performance cylinder heads, and high
compression (up to 11:1) recommended
• Camshafts with duration up to 250 degrees @ .050
• High stall converter or manual transmission, low (high numerical) rear axle gear
The price tag for all this performance goodness is really gonna floor you. You can bolt the 600 cfm vacuum secondary carburetor on your motor for a tick under 250 bucks; the 750 vacuum secondary model is just 10 dollars more. Even the 750 mechanical secondary carburetor is under 330 dollars. Check the prices on comparable carburetors and see if those aren’t screaming deals.
